Susie Varner
Susie Varner is primarily a western, equine, native american and landscape artist that paints in realism. Susie is very proud of her native Cherokee heritage. She likes for her art to be positive and uplifting and all of her horse art from way back had biblical names. Art was her first love and started drawing before she began school. Susie took a few art classes at West Texas State University in Canyon, Texas. However life took a different path as a stay-at-home mom. She is the First Vice President of Rockwall Art League, and member of Academy of Western Artists. Susie considers herself mostly self taught and loves to try new forms of art. She considers her high school art teacher, Gary Leddy, professional cowboy artist as her main influence. Another major influencer was Dr. Emilio Caballero, watercolorist, Dean of Art @ WTSU and rancher.
In 2019, Susie was one of 5 artists commissioned by Rockwall Arts in Public Places Committee to paint a fiberglass guitar for the city. Mrs. Varner wanted to depict Texas and the things that tourists expect to see when they visit. Having been around livestock, living on acreage the longhorn idea came to her and as she painted, she kept remembering something that her Dad used to say to her. "If you see a cow on the road, never swerve to miss it...a Fender Bender is always better than swerving and flipping on the road" so she titled her guitar "Fender Bender". The guitar is permanently installed at San Jacinto Plaza on the Rockwall Downtown Square and is painted in the Western Pop Art Style.
